About

A compliance tool built by people who actually do the work.

Most software for contractors is built by people who've never set foot on a job site. Nexus is the other thing.

Why this exists

Rob runs Apex Abatement and Demolition in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Like every other small abatement shop, Apex spent years tracking worker certifications in spreadsheets, project paperwork in three-ring binders, and daily field forms on whichever clipboard happened to be in the truck. When an OSHA inspector showed up, finding the right fit-test record for the right worker for the right job took longer than the inspection itself.

The products that pitched themselves as the answer were either built for general construction (Procore, PlanGrid) and treated asbestos and demolition as an afterthought, or they were sprawling enterprise platforms designed for companies ten times Apex's size. Nothing fit a 12-person crew that needs to know, right now, which of its workers can legally enter a regulated area on Monday morning.

So we built it.

What we're trying to do

Nexus is a single system of record for the things a small or mid-size abatement or demolition contractor has to keep straight: worker credentials, project permits, daily safety forms, scheduling, and the 30-year retention archive that OSHA requires for exposure records. It runs on a phone, a tablet, or a desktop, and it works in the basements of buildings that have no cell signal.

We're not trying to replace your accounting system. We're not trying to be a CRM. We do one thing: keep your compliance house in order so that when the auditor shows up, you have an answer in 90 seconds instead of 90 minutes.

How we think about the work

The cofounders

Cofounder, technical

Andrew Ettenger

Andrew is the technical cofounder of Nexus. He's been writing software for regulated industries for over ten years, mostly in healthcare and telecom, where audit trails, role-based access, and 30-year retention are table stakes. He also runs East Branch Software, a consultancy focused on SaaS for healthcare and other regulated work. He's based in Chesterfield, Massachusetts.

Cofounder, operations

Rob Sullivan

Rob is the operations cofounder of Nexus and the principal of Apex Abatement and Demolition, a licensed abatement and demolition contractor based in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Apex handles residential, commercial, industrial, and public-infrastructure work across New England. Everything Nexus knows about how a real abatement shop runs, Rob taught it.
