Surfacing Material

Asbestos material sprayed or troweled onto surfaces — fireproofing, acoustic plaster, decorative texture. One of AHERA's three asbestos material categories.

Surfacing material is asbestos-containing material that was sprayed on, troweled on, or otherwise applied to a surface: structural fireproofing on steel members, acoustic plaster on ceilings, and decorative or textured coatings.

It is one of AHERA’s three material categories, alongside thermal system insulation and miscellaneous material. Surfacing material is typically friable and, when disturbed or deteriorating, readily releases fibers, so its removal is usually Class I work under OSHA 1926.1101.

Because surfacing material is often spread over large areas, its removal commonly requires a full containment with a negative-pressure enclosure rather than the spot methods used for small jobs.
