State licensing & accreditation
Asbestos abatement work in Maine is licensed/accredited through the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP), Lead & Asbestos Hazard Prevention Program under Chapter 425 (Asbestos Management Regulations); 38 M.R.S. ch. 12-A, §§1271–1284.

Notification
Notifications go to the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) under Chapter 425; 38 M.R.S. ch. 12-A.
- Advance notice: At least 5 working days before demolition (buildings other than single-family homes).
- Notification details / form.
How the federal rules layer in
No matter the state, federal OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 (asbestos in construction), EPA NESHAP (40 CFR 61, Subpart M), and AHERA worker accreditation still apply. A state program layers its own licensing and notification on top of — not instead of — these. Where Maine has no state license, the federal accreditation and NESHAP notification requirements are the floor.
Maine-specific notes
- DEP both licenses contractors/certifies individuals and receives notifications.
- Demolition notification required even if no asbestos is identified.
- Licensed-work threshold is generally more than 3 linear/square feet of ACM.
