Regulated Area
A demarcated, access-restricted area where airborne asbestos may exceed the PEL. Required for Class I and II asbestos work under OSHA 1926.1101.
A regulated area is the bounded space OSHA 1926.1101 requires wherever Class I or II asbestos work is performed, or wherever airborne asbestos concentrations may exceed the permissible exposure limit.
The area must be marked with warning signs, restricted to authorized personnel, and entered only by workers wearing the required respiratory protection. Eating, drinking, smoking, and applying cosmetics are prohibited inside it.
The regulated area is the boundary that separates the contaminated work zone from clean areas, and it is where the decontamination unit, negative-pressure enclosure, and other controls are organized.
