Class II Work
Removal of asbestos-containing material other than thermal system insulation and surfacing material: typically wallboard, floor tile, roofing, siding, transite.
Class II asbestos work, defined in 29 CFR 1926.1101(b), covers removal of asbestos-containing materials other than thermal system insulation and surfacing material. The common Class II materials are wallboard, floor tile and sheet flooring, roofing material, siding, and transite (cementitious asbestos panels).
Class II work generally has lower required controls than Class I, because the materials are mostly non-friable and less likely to release fibers when handled. Work practices still apply: wet methods, intact removal where possible, and proper waste handling. A competent person must be on site, but full negative-pressure enclosure is generally not required.
Where Class II material is rendered friable by the removal method (e.g., breaking floor tile), the work practices required can be similar to Class I.
