Class IV Work

Custodial activity where employees clean up ACM-contaminated waste, debris, or dust.

Class IV asbestos work, defined in 29 CFR 1926.1101(b), covers custodial activity: cleaning up ACM-contaminated waste, debris, or dust resulting from Class I, II, or III work, or from spills.

It also covers routine custodial work in buildings with ACM (cleaning floors with vinyl asbestos tile, dusting surfaces in spaces with asbestos-containing materials).

Class IV training is at least 16 hours (commonly the “Asbestos Awareness” plus janitorial training package). Custodians performing Class IV work need to know how to identify ACM, how to avoid disturbing it, and what cleaning methods are permissible (HEPA vacuums and wet methods only, never dry sweeping).
