Class III Work
Repair and maintenance operations where ACM, including TSI and surfacing material, is likely to be disturbed.
Class III asbestos work, defined in 29 CFR 1926.1101(b), covers repair and maintenance operations where ACM (including thermal system insulation or surfacing material) is likely to be disturbed.
Examples include cutting into an asbestos-insulated pipe to make a plumbing repair, lifting a few floor tiles to access a sub-floor, or drilling through an asbestos-containing wall.
Class III work requires use of wet methods, mini-enclosures or glove bags as appropriate to the scope, respirators (minimum half-mask air-purifying), and a competent person who has been trained on asbestos and is responsible for the work practice. Workers performing Class III work need at least 16 hours of training (more in some jurisdictions).
